Congressman Patrick Meehan Statement on Administration Decision on Khalid Sheikh Mohammed Trial

Statement

Date: April 4, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Congressman Patrick Meehan (PA-07) today released the following statement regarding the Administration's decision today on the trial for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed:

"The announcement today that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and his co-conspirators will be tried by a military commission at Guantanamo is a welcomed decision. I am pleased that President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder reversed their decision and realized that the mastermind of 9/11 should not be tried in the same courtroom as everyday criminals in New York City. When the Commissions were first designed, there were concerns about issues like due process and access to evidence. Congress took important steps to fix these concerns and have positioned the tribunals to handle the trials fairly and effectively. It is time that there is justice for the victims of the 9/11 attacks."

Congressman Meehan is a member of the House Homeland Security Committee and Chairman of the Subcommittee on Counterterrorism and Intelligence.
